  1. Russian abstract-art movement developed about
  2. 1913 by Malevich. The Suprematist paintings
  3. gradually became more severe, until in 1918
  4. they reached a climax with the White on White
  5. series showing white geometrical shapes on a
  6. white ground. Suprematism was inspired in
  7. part by Futurist and Cubist ideas. Early
  8. paintings such as Black Square 1915 (Russian
  9. Museum, Leningrad) used purely geometrical
  10. shapes in bold dynamic compositions. The aims
  11. of the movement were expressed by Malevich as
  12. `the supremacy of pure feeling or perception
  13. in the pictorial arts - the expression of
  14. non-objectivity'.
